If you attract the attention of a predator it will not matter what you do to fend him off.
The Game is on and will only end when he wins the Game.

Only Convicts know the "Real Ropes" which takes years and years to learn inside.
You Learn these Ropes by breaking them and over years and years you learn these Ropes (rules).
Just because you label yourserlf a "Criminal" does not mean you know the Ropes of prison.
Inside or outside it does not matter how you "Learn the Ropes" of prison. You will learn them on the inside, but you will only learn them when you break them. This process is painfully slow and you will be Regulated, Tuned Up, or in your words, Beat up (not always) each time you break a rule you do not know.
Preparation is the key to "Easy Time".
If you're going on a Vacation to a foreign land you might buy a book to learn the language or watch a video. You'll even get immunized (shots) so you will not get deadly sick.
Be smart if you're going to prison and learn the Ropes before you go in. Regardless of when, you are going to learn the Ropes if you go to prison. I teach Prison Etiquette in my business.
Prison has its own language and its beneficial to a new prisoner to learn the lingo or pick up as much as possible.
There are three classifications of people inside doing time: (1) Convicts, people who live by a strict Code but few of these dinosaurs are around still; (2) Prisoners, people who live by a loose set of Code passed down by Convicts; (3) Inmates, scum of the earth, even the Prison Staff despise Inmates. Inmates try to play both side of the "fence". They want to be a Correctional Officer and Prisoner at the same time. That is the truth.
We never ever use the word "inmate" unless its to refer to a person who is "No Good".
